A new annual prize of £1000, with publication in The Burlington Magazine’s annual issue dedicated to Northern European Art, plus one year subscription to The Burlington Magazine.
Previously unpublished essays of 1000-1500 words will be submitted by early career scholars. (This is defined as within 15 years of their most recent post-graduate degree, allowing for career breaks.) Submissions should be in English and should include the candidate’s CV, all as a single PDF.
The prize is open to UK and international applicants. Preference will be given to object-related scholarship such as published in The Burlington Magazine.
The Prize Jury of five people will be made up of The Burlington Magazine editor, a member of Cambridge University History of Art Department (currently Alexander Marr, as Head of Department), a UK curator (currently Dr Emma Capron), a member of the History of Art Department of KU Leuven (currently Dr Katlijne Van der Stighelen) and a Belgian curator (currently Dr Sabine van Sprang).
The Burlington will host the jury meeting, although this can also be online / hybrid.
Cambridge University will administer the prize and host an award event with a talk delivered by the winner (also streamed / recorded) and a reception or dinner for the jury and other guests. The Burlington will be responsible for editing and sourcing / paying for illustrations for publication in the Magazine.
The Burlington and Cambridge University will coordinate marketing and publicity.
The prize funding will cover marketing costs of c.£400 / year and reasonable travel expenses for jurors and the winning entrant. The participating organisations will also seek other sources of funding / support for travel costs.

Judges to grade entries and agree shortlist: 29 September 2025
Jury to meet during October 2025; winner to be notified by Friday 31 October 2025
Publication of winning article July 2026
