Current HNA members are eligible to apply for a 2025 HNA Fellowship. The topic of the research project must be within the field of the art and architecture of the Netherlands (Dutch and Flemish) from ca. 1350-1750, together with the art of Germany, England, and France, and their global trading networks. Up to $1500 may be requested for purposes such as: travel to collections or research facilities, purchase of photographs or reproduction rights, subvention of a publication, curatorial project, project in the digital humanities, participation in specialized methodology workshops (for ex., on digital humanities instruction, material technical analysis, remaking techniques). We also will consider requests for coverage of childcare or other related costs to make research and writing time possible. Please note that language courses are not covered. For PhD candidates, be aware that these HNA fellowships aim to cover expenses for focused research within the wider PhD project, so be sure to specify in your proposal what aspect(s) of your dissertation you will be concentrating on for the purpose of your request. Priority will be given to projects that are close to conclusion and those not previously awarded an HNA Fellowship. Please note that HNA Board members are ineligible to apply.
HNA is committed to increasing the diversity of the field and its scholarship, as well as supporting the values of equity and inclusion. For this reason, we particularly encourage applications from BIPOC scholars, and from perspectives long underrepresented in the field of Northern European art.
Winners will be notified in February 2025, with funds to be distributed by April, with the expectation that they will be used to cover your project-related expenses incurred over the ensuing 12 months.
The application should consist of: (1) a statement of proposal, in which you describe your project and its significance, situate it briefly within the relevant literature, and demonstrate the need for research support (500-1000 words); (2) a budget; (3) a list of further funds applied/received for the same project; and (4) a current C.V. (5) Doctoral applicants must also either get their advisor to sign the bottom of their proposal, or the advisor can send a separate email simply acknowledging their approval of the project (not a letter of rec), under the subject line: HNA Fellowship Support for [Candidate’s Name]. Applications should be compiled into a single pdf and sent via e-mail by January 10, 2025, to Ashley West, Vice-President, Historians of Netherlandish Art. E-mail: ashley.west@temple.edu
