Leiden Collection.
Current HNA members are eligible to apply for an HNA Award for Scholarly Research,
Publication, and Travel. The topic of the research project must be within the field of the art and
architecture of the Netherlands (Dutch and Flemish) from ca. 1350-1750, together with the art of
Germany, England, and France, and their global networks. Up to $1500 may be requested for
purposes such as travel to collections or research facilities, purchase of photographs or
reproduction rights, subvention of a publication, curatorial project, project in the digital
humanities, participation in specialized methodology workshops (for ex., on digital humanities
instruction, material technical analysis, remaking techniques). We also will consider requests for
coverage of childcare or other related costs to make research and writing time possible. Please
note that tuition for courses (apart from short-term specialized workshops as described above) is
not covered. For PhD candidates, be aware that these HNA fellowships aim to cover expenses
for a focused task within the wider PhD project, so be sure to specify in your proposal how the
award will support the completion of your work (for instance, travel to a particular archive or
museum; purchase of scanned documents or images; child care to enable time spent at a specific
research sources; etc.). Priority will be given to projects that are close to conclusion and those
not previously awarded an HNA Fellowship. Please note that HNA Board members are ineligible
to apply.
HNA is committed to increasing the diversity of the field and its scholarship, as well as
supporting the values of equity and inclusion. For this reason, we actively encourage applications
from perspectives long underrepresented in the field of Northern European art.
Award recipients will be notified in February 2026, with funds to be distributed by April, with
the expectation that they will be used to cover your project-related expenses incurred over the
ensuing 12 months. The application should consist of (1) a statement of proposal, in which you
describe your project and its significance, situate it briefly within the relevant literature, and
demonstrate the need for research support (500-1000 words); (2) a budget listing how funds will
be used; (3) a list of further funds applied/received for the same project; and (4) a current C.V.
(5) Doctoral applicants must also have their advisor sign the bottom of their proposal, or the
advisor can send a separate email briefly acknowledging their approval of the application under
the subject line: HNA Award Support for [Candidate’s Name]. (A full letter of recommendation
is not required.)
Applications should be compiled into a single pdf and sent via e-mail by January 23, 2026, to
