Crossing: Collection and Craft
Colloquium of the Comité International d’Histoire de l’Art (CIHA) in Kurashiki, Japan
January 13 and 14, 2027 at Ohara Museum in Kurashiki, Japan
The CIHA Colloquium has been held three times in Japan: “Japan and Europe in Art History” (Tokyo, 1991), “Between East and West: Reproductions in Art” (Naruto, 2013), and “Toward the Future: Museums and Art History in East Asia” (Tokyo, 2019). The fourth colloquium, scheduled for winter 2027, will take place in a regional city in western Japan—Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture—a place rich in history, culture, and art. The main venue will be the Ohara Museum of Art, located in the Bikan Historical Quarter.
The theme of the colloquium is “Crossing: Collection and Craft.” Inspired by both the collection of the Ohara Museum of Art and Kurashiki’s identity as a city of craft, the colloquium will address universal issues in art. Specifically, it will explore two key areas of intersection: (1) the migration of artworks and the formation of collections, and (2) aesthetic values associated with craft, known as kōgei in Japan.
Applicants wishing to present in either of the two sessions of this colloquium are required to complete the Application Form for Speakers and to upload the following PDF files here.
(1) An abstract of no more than 250 words (file name: “Surname_Abstract”)
(2) A C.V. of no more than 150 words (file name: “Surname_CV”)
The application form, abstract, and C.V. should be written in English, although both English and French are designated as the official languages of CIHA colloquia, and speakers may prepare their papers in either English or French. The application and abstract submission period is from March 1 to May 15, 2026.
