The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for teaching and research into the History of Art and the conservation of paintings, and is also home to one of the finest small art museums in the world.
The Courtauld Gallery is seeking a candidate committed to a curatorial career in the field of Old Master drawings for a 24-month Curatorial Fellowship beginning in early 2020.
This position is supported by the Getty Foundation’s The Paper Project: Prints and Drawings Curatorship in the 21st Century, and awarded by The Courtauld Gallery. It provides an exciting opportunity for an emerging scholar who has recently received a doctorate in art history, or is close to completion, to acquire early career experience in curatorial practice in the field of drawings. The individual will be fully integrated into all aspects of curatorial work, including research and cataloguing, exhibition organization, education and publications, collections management, digital projects, acquisitions, conservation, and public speaking.
This is a period of transformation as the Courtauld undertakes a major capital project, Courtauld Connects, which includes the complete refurbishment of the Gallery and the redisplay of its collections in early 2021. This will be a unique opportunity for the fellow to be involved in the organisation and reinstallation of the collection. The fellowship will provide a rich context to interact with curators across the Gallery, academic staff and conservators, as well as the public and researchers who come to study the collection. The Curatorial Fellow, in consultation with the curator, will also have the opportunity to pursue a research project related to the drawings collection, leading to a focused display in The Gilbert and Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery. There will be many opportunities for the fellow to learn about conservation issues, and to work regularly alongside the conservator. The ultimate goal for the fellow would be to achieve a deep understanding of the variety of skills needed to succeed as a curator of works on paper, and to apply those skills to a career as a museum professional. While working within the Gallery, the fellow will have the opportunity to be part of the Courtauld scholarly community, which characterizes our institution and makes it such a unique place among the museums in the United Kingdom. The wide offer of talks, lectures, seminars and working groups will be a great attraction to the fellow.
