The Burlington Magazine’s annual edition devoted to the art of Northern Europe appeared.
The February issue contains an article by CODART member Lars Hendrikman on a painting of a Young Bacchus, formerly attributed to Gerard de Lairesse, which turns out to have been made after one of the 83 drawings with scenes from the Metamorphoses by Godfried Maes (Antwerp 1649-1700). The composition in question depicts The finding of the infant Bacchus (on the island Chios), it is unique in its iconography and dates from after 1762. No painted copies of the other drawings by Maes are known today.
Another article delves into the many mysteries that surround the end and aftermath of Jan van Eyck’s career. When he died in 1441 he left unfinished works, but where exactly was his workshop, how many people worked for him and did his widow, Margaret, try to keep the practice going? In this issue, a team of scholars present the results of archival discoveries in Bruges that offer answers to all these questions.
In 1802 Tsar Alexander I bought a painting of the crucifixion of St Peter attributed to Caravaggio, now in the Hermitage. As Anne Delvingt argues, it is by the Antwerp painter Gerard Seghers, but it may reveal his knowledge of Caravaggio’s lost painting of the subject.
Martin Biddle returns to Nonsuch, the building on which he published a definitive article in the Burlington in 1985, to demonstrate that Henry VIII’s vanished palace in Surrey possessed the first Classical facade in Renaissance England. Also in this issue, Christopher White discusses a new catalogue of Rembrandt’s landscape drawings and Ivan Gaskell reviews the MFA’s new galleries of Dutch and Flemish art.
