Rice University’s Department of Art History seeks to hire a full professor, or advanced associate professor, to take a future leadership role in the department. The area of specialization is open, although candidates working in pre-modern and/or non-European fields are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial administrative experience at the level of department chair, center director, or a comparable position. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and continue research in their area of expertise. Rice University has a semester-based teaching schedule with a 2-2 teaching load (reduced to 1-1 for department chair).
Rice’s Department of Art History offers BA and PhD programs with a focus on small cohorts, engaged advising and the training of both academics and museum professionals. The department has close working relationships with other departments in the School of Humanities as well as the School of Architecture and it is also involved in a range of rapidly growing interdisciplinary programs, such as Center for African and African American Studies, the Center for the Study of Women, Gender & Sexuality, Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Medical Humanities, Cinema and Media Studies and Museums and Cultural Heritage. We also maintain strong and growing ties with Houston’s world class museums and cultural institutions including the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Menil Collection, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Review of applications begins December 15, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Application materials must include a letter of application, CV, teaching, research, and diversity statements, a description of leadership experience and philosophy, the names of three references, and a sample publication of not more than 50 pages.
