DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin is pleased to invite applications for the full-time position of Full Professor and holder of the Kay Fortson Chair in European Art or Associate Professor and fellow to the Kay Fortson Chair in European Art.
This appointment, to be made at the rank of Associate or full Professor with tenure (rank commensurate with qualifications), will begin in fall 2025. Relocation to Austin, Texas is required. Applicants must be scholars of European art in the broadest sense and have attained nationally/internationally prominent, high impact research profiles. We seek candidates with wide interest in the histories, theories, and methodologies of art history and who value inter- and cross-disciplinary thinking.
The scope of this endowed position encompasses the various subfields of Early Modern European art and material culture spanning ca. 1400-1700. We welcome the interest of advanced scholars whose research and teaching reflects innovative methods within the study of European art, particularly in a global context and in an era when colonial contacts and exchanges were forged between Europe and other continents.
Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels is required, from broad survey courses to seminars in areas of expertise. Research funds are associated with the Fortson Chair endowment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ph.D. in Art History or adjacent field; Rank of Associate or Full Professor
- National/international prominence as a scholar
- Expertise in the art of Europe, with a preference for 1400-1700
- A broad interest in the histories, theories, and methodologies of Art History, as well as inter- and cross-disciplinary thinking
- Scholarship that engages innovative methodologies developed in Art History to contend with the dynamics and challenges of the Early Modern era
- Experience teaching and mentoring students
