The Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art (JHNA) seeks an editor-in-chief who is interested in advancing the journal’s publication of innovative scholarship. We encourage applications from academics, museum professionals, and independent scholars who are open to a broad range of approaches and to contributing to the diversity of our journal’s areas of coverage. We welcome nominations and self-nominations.
Founded in 2009, JHNA, the semi-annual, open-access electronic journal of the Historians of Netherlandish Art, publishes peer-reviewed original scholarship on Dutch, Flemish, German, and Franco-Flemish art and material culture dating from the medieval period through the eighteenth century. We publish JHNA Perspectives state-of-the-field essays and JHNA Conversations about current curatorial practices. Recent guest-edited special issues have been devoted to innovative digital art history projects (15.1 Dutch Textile Trade) and research that brings together art historians, conservators, and scientists (17.2 Colored Grounds). As an online journal, JHNA has taken a leading role in the publication of enhanced forms of imagery made possible by digital technology.
JHNA’s editor-in-chief is responsible for shaping the content and character of the journal and for managing its publication. Working collaboratively with an editorial board of three associate editors and the past editor-in chief, as well as with a copy editor and managing editor, the editor-in-chief oversees and participates in the editing of the journal at all stages. This includes soliciting, commissioning, and vetting articles; advancing the peer-review process; communicating with authors during revisions; and seeing articles through to publication. Throughout, JHNA editors work closely with authors to develop and improve their articles. Typically, the editorial team meets quarterly via Zoom.
The editor-in-chief liaises with and submits an annual report to the HNA Board.
The ideal candidate would be a specialist in Netherlandish, German, or Franco-Flemish art with experience serving in an editorial capacity. Familiarity with editing and peer-reviewing manuscripts is desired, as is the capacity to delegate responsibility and manage workflow. We seek an individual who would be committed to the journal’s mission, authors, and readers.
The selected candidate will be encouraged to work closely with the current editor-in-chief throughout 2027.
The editor-in-chief serves a four-year, renewable term and must be a member of HNA. This is a volunteer position that will run from 2027 through 2030.
