Maria Sibylla Merian and the Tradition of Flower Depictions

2017 marks the 300-year anniversary of Maria Sibylla Merian’s death. She was a native Frankfurt artist and also one of the most renowned naturalists and painters of her time. This exhibition contextualizes her work within other flower paintings by her contemporaries and predecessors, such as Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, and Joris Hoefnagel. Previously at the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. With publication by Michael Roth et al., Munich: Hirmer, 2017, ISBN 978-3-77742-787-4, $45.
