Marrigje Rikken has been appointed director of Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar as of 1 September 2024, the museum announced today. She succeeds Patrick van Mil, who recently announced his retirement in August.
CODART member Marrigje Rikken has been working at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem since 2014, most recently as Head of Collections and Exhibitions. She has curated several exhibitions, and her responsibilities have included collection and exhibition policy, the trans-historical collection, and the establishment of the Frans Hals Research Center. She previously worked at the Rijksmuseum and the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History and holds a Ph.D. in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Dutch art.

About her new role, Marrigje said, “I am very much looking forward to working with the team to further develop the museum for and with the city. In these times of polarization in society, I want to bridge past and present with makers, communities and visitors through various collaborations. The museum is for everyone and can stimulate curiosity and reflection on current social issues, such as the transition to a climate-conscious and digital society. In this way, Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar can show how culture and heritage contribute to a sustainable society for future generations.”
