Obituary: Michael Baxandall
Michael Baxandall died on August 12, 2008. His fi rst book was Giotto and the Orators of 1971. The following year he published Painting and Experience in Fifteenth-Century Italy, which established his reputation. For historians of Northern European art he is especially known for The Limewood Sculptors of Renaissance Germany (1980) for which he was awarded the Mitchell Prize. In 1994 Baxandall published Tiepolo and the Pictorial Intelligence together with Svetlana Alpers who shared his interest in the mental processes involved in the making of art. Other books are Patterns of Intention (1985), Shadows of Enlightenment (1994) and Words for Pictures (2003).
