In 2016, an Old Masters section was opened in the former Museum Oskar Reinhart. Thanks to the Dutch Golden Age paintings of the Jakob Briner Foundation, the museum experienced a significant expansion. Amongst these paintings is The Foot Operation, an extended loan from a private collection. Until recently, it was attributed to a painter from Rembrandt’s circle; his colleague and friend Jan Lievens was conjectured to be the creator. The extensive Rembrandt Research Project, however, has acknowledged the small Winterthur work to be an original from the master’s own hand. This important aspect is the incentive for a new appraisal of the painting and its presentation in a small exhibition. Together with Rembrandt’s etchings from the Oskar Reinhart Foundation, The Foot Operation will be shown in an appropriate context. Curated by Andrea Lutz, David Schmidhauser.
