The forgotten masters. Pieter Pourbus and painting in Bruges from 1525 to 1625.
Monday December 11, 2017, Groeningemuseum (Vriendenzaal), Bruges
The exhibition Pieter Pourbus and the forgotten masters (Groeningemuseum, Bruges, 12.10.2017 – 21.01.2018) focuses on painting in Bruges during the 16th century. For Bruges art this was a stimulating period. Talented painters such as Pieter Pourbus, Marcus Gerards and the Claeissens family were able to reconcile artistic tradition and innovation through devising a personal style. At the same time, they developed dynamic strategies to present answers to the declining economy. Nevertheless, these artists were often “forgotten”. In the art-historical literature the master works of the Flemish primitives are given the most attention. Now, based on new research, the exhibition exposes the unexpected diversity and creativity of the Bruges art production in the 16th century. Numerous new works are presented and oeuvres of forgotten painters are assembled. In addition, new insights in the work and lives of more well-known painters are brought to the fore. The symposium will highlight the results of recent research regarding Bruges painting in the 16th century. As new findings inadvertently lead to new questions, the symposium addresses the questions that remained unanswered in the catalogue.
The symposium, including coffee and lunch and followed by a reception, will take place from 9:30 until 17:30 at the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, and will present two opportunities for visiting the exhibition. For more information: https://www.visitbruges.be/programma-studiedag-vergeten-meesters
