The Art Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a two-year, full-time appointment with possibility of renewal as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History beginning July 1, 2021.
The successful candidate for this position will be dedicated to rethinking the canons, objects, and sites of inquiry in the fields of art history and visual culture. Applicants are sought whose research and teaching portfolio approach visual culture through the critical lenses of diasporas, transnational histories, migration, and the legacies of colonialism, and whose area of expertise would enrich current departmental strengths in ancient art and modern and contemporary art. This position welcomes scholars committed to reimagining art historical methods and techniques, including approaches to research, fieldwork, and scholarly analysis.
Candidates must be able to teach core courses in the art history major at all levels, including surveys and specialized topics courses, as well as an advanced seminar on “Critical Methods of Art History.” This faculty member would be invited to collaborate with other undergraduate departments and to help prepare majors for careers in the art world. Other duties include advising students, conducting research projects, participating in department and university service, and ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications and presentations. Applicants must demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution. Hollins University is committed to the core values of diversity and inclusion, and applications are sought from members of underrepresented populations and those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations. The Art Department is housed in the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center, which offers state-of-the-art teaching facilities and a close collaboration with the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum.
Qualified candidates must have substantive, effective teaching experience at the undergraduate level and a Ph.D. in hand in art history or a related field by July 1, 2021. Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy; a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement that addresses how their writing, research, teaching, and/or service experience will enhance the institution’s efforts to support these values and an increasingly diverse student population; three letters of recommendation; and graduate school transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) to artsearch@hollins.edu.
Review of applications will begin immediately, and will continue until the position is filled. However, priority will be given to applications received by March 19, 2021. Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.
