Willibald Sauerländer (1924-2018)

On April 18th, Willibald Sauerländer passed away. Although primarily an art historian of late-medieval France, he also made significant contributions to the field of Flemish art history with Der katholische Rubens: Heilige und Märtyrer (2011), translated into English by the Getty Research Institute as The Catholic Rubens: Saints and Martyrs (2014). Sauerländer was director of the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte from 1970-1989. He taught at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the University of Marburg, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Harvard University, and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1991, he gave the A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
